The Styley

This was taken on my first trip to Moon Juice's Venice location. I went at least two other times while I was in town. No joke. I commit to things I like!

Moon Juice, Los Angeles

I spent the weekend binge-watching Scandal and eating Entenmann's doughnut holes. Okay, that might be an exaggeration, but I did do both of those at certain points during the weekend, and I fully enjoyed the moments while they lasted. That said, I'm all about balance, and today I need to balance Sugar Festival 2015 out with lighter fare. Unfortunately, the lighter fare I'm really craving is far, far away from me right now, in Los Angeles, a place that seems, from this distance, like a tropical utopia filled with palm trees and skinny people. It's also the home of Moon Juice, a company created by Amanda Chantal Bacon. Bacon is a chef--her mentor is Suzanne Goin, of Lucques fame--and her juices and elixirs and snacks and potions all have the touch of a chef. Their flavors are tempered, distinctive and memorable: I had, among others (I made three visits while I was in LA in November) the Canyon Greens, a combination of collards, rainbow chard, parsley, celery and cucumber, and I will say that it is one of the best green juices I've ever had. Yes. I'm actually willing to go that far. There's something about the mix that keeps it fresh and light without any loss of earthiness. For novice green juicers--and when I say green, I mean green green, not green with apple juice--it's a fantastic way to break the seal. You won't feel like you've got a mouthful of grass, you'll just feel like a superior version of yourself, one fortified by serious vitamins and minerals, a straight shot to the freaking bloodstream. I'll take that over whiskey any day.

The other thing I like about Moon Juice is that it's not just about juice, it's about wellness on every level. There's raw food and there are beauty and bath products and spices and dusts and tonics to cure any ill. On the company website, Bacon writes, "I created Moon Juice for people interested in a new way of living. Not a way where you have to erase the past, but a way fueled by excitement to help yourself live better." And I am seriously down with that.
