    The Styley: Lou Reed

I was watching Oliver Stone's The Doors the first time I heard the song "Venus in Furs." At the time, I was in love with Jim Morrison and would have done anything to go back in time to marry him and have deep intellectual conversations about Neitzche and suffering,  rushed up my spine and the jingle-jangle of the guitars got into my nerve endings, and I was hooked. I was tired, I was weary, and I could sleep for a thousand years.

Styley Events: Mexican Summer Five-Year Music Festival

So, I spent Saturday afternoon and part of the evening shooting the Mexican Summer Five-Year Music Festival for Refinery 29. (You can check out the finished piece here.) Many things about this course of events were awesome, including the following facts:

    • Pioneer Works, in Red Hook, was the venue. Even though getting to Red Hook seems to involve traveling over the river (literally) and through the woods (not so much), I love going there. Plus, Pioneer Works is an awesome place whose mission is: "to present and promote arts and science through exhibitions, residencies, classes, lectures, performing arts, screenings, community events, publications and more." So cool.

    Streetstyle: Rosie Rittenberry

What drew me to Rosie wasn't the sunglasses, as fabulous as they are, it was the combination of her pale skin and her bright red lipstick. I guess I'm just a sucker for a red lip, and this particular orange-inflected shade is one I simply can't wear. And while we're on the topic of red lips, I'll just say that my two favorites right now are Benefit's "Frenched" (which appears to no longer exist, much to my great dismay, so the link is to a product that looks similar--"Flirt Alert" is the one you want) and Lipstick Queen's "Red Sinner" with a coating of Burt's Bees lip balm with pomegranate oil underneath and over. "Red Sinner" also looks great with Lipstick Queen's "Medieval" on top. "Medieval" is also a great light red for day, in case you want to rock red but don't feel like going all the way during the daylight hours.

    Jamie David, Howard Street

TS: What's the story behind the shoes? Where do they come from?

Jamie David: They're actually samples of shoes that 7 for All Mankind did; I used to work there, heading up their PR team. They were one of the first styles that [7 for All Mankind] created, and I had to have them for myself.

    Kylie Sirico, SEO specialist

The Styley: So what's the story behind your amazing studded shoes?

Kylie Sirico: I had the day off, and I was wandering around Boston--I used to live in the Boston area--looking for a pair of shoes. I had broken my flats that day, and these were in this boutique on Newbury Street, one of my favorite stores. I fell in love with them. It was more of an impulse purchase, but as I wore them I fell even more in love with them.

    The Styley: Martha Sarfaty, cheesemonger

The Styley: You're a cheesemonger, which means you sell cheese. Where do you do that?

Martha Sarfaty: The Bedford Cheese Shop in Williamsburg.

TS: Let's start with the belt. What happened on the day you bought it?

The Styley: And what drew you to the turtleneck, which is gingham, not a print one often sees on turtlenecks?

Zach Frater: I like to wear kind of feminine clothing. I find a lot of stuff in women's sections.
