Streetstyle: Sandra Straayer

I met Sandra on Fifth Avenue in Midtown. We were both going to see the Cindy Sherman exhibit at MoMA on its last day at the museum, and she was kind enough to stop for me even though we were both in a bit of a rush (it was 3:15, and the museum closes at 5:30).

Where did you get your glasses?

They’re Chloe. I bought them at Barney’s in 2007.

Lipstick color?

Nars matte lip pencil “Pop Life.”

Earrings?

From See Wonder.

Scarf?

From John Varvatos on Bowery Street.

Dress?

From a friend of mine. She sent it to me from San Diego.

Bag?

It’s from Morocco. It was a gift also.

Shoes?

Ximena Rivera, this Columbian lady who just started making shoes.

So. I assume you live in New York?

Yes.

And what do you do here?

I work in fashion, art and interiors.

All at once?

Yeah, all the time. I’m freelance. I do all kinds of stuff.

So you have your own company?

Yeah, I do. I started out in art, and then I got a tailoring degree from FIT, and then I started doing interior design.

When you’re doing interior design, what’s the first thing you look for in a space? What’s the first thing you assess?

The personality of the person whose space it is and the time they’re going to spend there.

If you had a life philosophy or mantra, what would it be?

Don’t ever listen to what anybody else tells you.
