Hat: Five bucks from a street market. Glasses: From a store in Mountain View. Sweater: Rugby. Nailpolish: OPI. Pants: Asos. Shoes: Born.
Forgive my brief absence from the World of Streetstyle. Monday the movers came, Tuesday I finished up with the last minute things that always seem to crop up when you move, and Wednesday, well…I wrote this blog post while on the flight to New York. The wonders of modern technology!
A couple of weeks before I left San Francisco I went to the farmer’s market at Fort Mason, which is where I met Anna. Here’s a little bit about her:
Where are you from?
I’m originally from Russia, but I’m German, so I lived half my life in Russia and half in Germany.
What are you doing in San Francisco?
I am a mother…I am a nursing mother, actually.
That’s intense. How did you get away, to go to the farmer’s market?
Oh, come on. Today is a holiday. My husband is somewhere with the baby, so she’s sleeping and I’m buying fruits.
Do you work, or are you a full-time mom?
I’m a mom.
And where do you live in San Francisco?
Russian Hill.
What’s your favorite thing about San Francisco?
That I can stroll around on foot so I don’t need a car. It has excellent weather for being outside with the kids…not hot and not cold.
What are some of your favorite places to go to in San Francisco?
I love strolling around streets like Chestnut, Union, Polk. I really enjoy Crissy Field. Everything close to water is excellent. Right now I am only on playgrounds.
Do you have a favorite playground?
Yes! It’s on Chestnut.
What is that one called?
I think it’s called the Moscone Recreation Center.
That’s good to know–a hot tip for new mothers.
Yup, yup (smiling). It’s busy, but it’s a good one.
What is something that has inspired you recently?
Actually, my daughter is what inspires me. For example: I shop a lot for my daughter, on the Internet, and in stores. Right now, I’m buying clothes for me in children’s departments. I bought a few T-shirts at Gap, some leggings at Gap, you know 14, 16 years old. It’s so colorful, I love it, all the prints, it’s shiny and colorful.
Wow. I wish I were smaller.
You just need to bear a child and nurse, and you will shrink.
You get fat first, and then you get skinny.
(Laughing) Yes. Yes.
What’s something you’re obsessed with right now?
Only my daughter. I cannot be away from her for more than a few hours. I go crazy.
Is it like what people say, that it’s a love you’ve never felt before?
It is something completely different than what I expected. I thought, okay, I love my husband, but you know, it’s your life. Even when I’m mad at her, I love her to death at the same time.
A slightly different picture of Anna appeared in the “Best of Readers’ Streetstyle” in the New York Times online on Monday. Check out the story here.
