Big Sur Journal #2: Nepenthe

According to Wikipedia, nepenthe “is a medicine for sorrow, literally an anti-depressant–a “drug of forgetfulness” mentioned in ancient Greek literature and Greek mythology, depicted as originating in Egypt.” Which means it was the perfect place to go while in Big Sur on my last writing group getaway.

Actually, the reason we went to Nepenthe was not to forget anything at all, but rather to remember various literary heroes–Henry Miller, Jack Kerouac–who hung out there. I have no idea whether or not the food is any good, but the place was swamped. Whether you want to eat, admire, or be inspired, it’s definitely worth a stop.
