Streetstyle: Black and White, or Homage to Lillian Bassman

Shot with Hipstamatic, Loftus lens, US 1776 film. Processed in Instagram with the Sierra filter.

Normally I shoot in color–one of the two photo classes I took in college was taught by the artist Gregory Crewdson, who is all about color (and some other things, of course)–but I accidentally chose the wrong film in Hipstamatic on Friday and ended up with these black and whites instead. I liked the way they turned out, so I thought I’d post them today.

These images got me thinking about the fashion and fine art photographer Lillian Bassman, who I discovered last week when I read her obituary in the New York Times. Well, better late than never, I guess. In any event, Bassman was known for her dreamy, rather mysterious work, much of which was photographed in…you guessed it, black and white.

If you have a minute, definitely google Bassman. Her images are stunning. And so…my homage.

Besides, it’s always good to mix it up.
