Styley People Doing Styley Things: Augusten Burroughs

They were sure the answer was just around the corner.

No, your eyes do not deceive you. The man pictured above is indeed the awesome writer Augusten Burroughs. My friend Nate (the dude on the right) and I went to hear A.B. speak at the University of San Francisco (USF) last week. We had no idea what to expect, and Burroughs delivered beyond any expectations we possibly could have had. He told us “you don’t have to have a story, you have to pay attention,” and described himself as “an accidental memoirist.” Nate and I were totally blown away by him, and just wanted to go home and write for hours and hours.

Which book to start with? Honestly, they’re all good. Buy them here and here, and have yourself a little literary fiesta.

Yay !! I am a AB fan, for realz. His recent short stories release Magical Thinking, is amaze-boots. I never read Running with Scissors (gasp!?) but I read Dry when I was fresh off the bar stool and newly sober, and was comforted and amused- A winning combination. I think he is a gem.

Whaaaatttt. He is only my favourite author ever. I love anything about a dysfunctional family and Running with Scissors hit the bullseye. The movie was panned but Gwyneth, Annette Benning, and the brilliant Evan Rachel Wood. Worth a see and the soundtrack? I could listen to Year of the Cat every day of my life….
